Description of Duties
This is a mandatory position and is required to report to work in the event of an emergency closing; adverse weather; or a public health emergency.
This position reports directly to the Maintenance Supervisor to provide and assist in the general electrical maintenance of the electrical systems on campus and is considered as journeyman level work in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures. Work assignments are received from a supervisor, are performed independently and in accordance with accepted trade policies. This position requires occasional overtime and on-call duty. The essential tasks include, but not limited to the following:
Serve as technical lead for all electrical installation and repair on the Durham campus
Maintain and repair all electrical distribution and panel equipment
Installation of all new and electrical equipment as needed
Maintain all switchgear and electric motors
Make all preventative maintenance as needed on all electrical systems and related items
Serve as shop lead for the electrical department
Installation of conduit and pull electrical, data, and telephone lines as needed
Electrical work and lighting for new in-house construction projects
Inspect building electrical systems on a daily basis
Maintain emergency back-up generators
Ensure electrical systems and panels are code compliant
Schedule shutdowns and maintenance items with supervisor
Complete daily work orders as required
Provide reports on safety items and work status
Coordinates with other facilities and operations staff and contractors in determining complex electrical needs and repairs
Performs PM task as per manufacturer recommended schedule
Continually evaluates PM task and forwards recommendations to supervisor
Performs weekly PM inspections and identifies and records any deficiencies found
Communicate with customers on any electrical related problems in their areas and provides status updates
Develops a good working relationship with customers
Identifies facilities-related electrical problems that require in-depth analysis and identifies options for solving those problems
Solve unusual facility electrical problems that require the application of journey level trades knowledge and determines the most effective and efficient course of action
Gathers and analyzes/interprets information to better understand the nature of the problem
Evaluates options and chooses appropriate action by considering potential outcomes. Makes sure that problem is appropriately addressed
Ensures all work meets and/or exceeds applicable codes and standards
Electrical Shop Coordination
Provide list of materials to keep in inventory stock for electrical shop
Maintain Electrical Shop and provide recommendations
General Plant Facility Duties

Assist with campus snow/ice removal
Provide assistance on set-ups and special events
Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / CompetenciesConsiderable knowledge of the standard practices and methods of the electrical trade, skill in the use and care of tools and ability to locate and correct defects in electrical systems and equipment is required. A North Carolina Electrical license is required or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. 3-5 years experience working in the electrical field is preferred. Valid driver's license is required and must be maintained with a clean driving record.
This position may be required to lift 50 lbs, climb and work on ladders or elevated platforms.
Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsGraduation from high school or equivalent; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Preferred: 3 years experience working in the electrical field. NC Electrical Contractors License required or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Must have a valid driver's license with no serious driving-related convictions.

Vacation: For SHRA, earn from 14 days to 26 days per year based on years of state service. Leave is earned monthly.

Health Insurance: Employee only coverage under the State Health Plan (PPO) is provided to employees that work 30 or more hours a week. The cost is determined by the type of coverage elected by the employee. Dependent coverage is available by payroll deduction.
Retirement: Required participation for all employees working 3/4 time or more. Option (1) Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS) requires 6% of gross salary. Employees are vested for retirement after 5 years. Option (2) The Optional Retirement Program (ORP) requires 6% of gross salary. Employees in ORP are vested after 5 years of participating in ORP. As a participant in either retirement program, you are automatically covered for short-term disability (eligible after 1 year of service/no cost), long term disability (eligible after 5 year of service/no cost). Death benefit of minimum $25,000/maximum $50,000 based on previous 12 month salary (eligible after 1 year of service/no cost).
Supplemental Retirement Plans: Supplemental retirement plans provide an additional opportunity to help you reach your retirement goals. Supplemental Plan offerings such as a 401(k), 403(b), or 457(b) on a Roth (after-tax) or pre-tax contributions from several different vendors.
Longevity: Payable to SHRA employees after 10 years of creditable state service (EHRA employees are not eligible).
Tuition Waiver: Three courses per academic year tuition free (at any of UNC 17 campuses that offer courses) for permanent full-time employees. Under Educational Assistance, tuition reimbursement may be available for attendance at Community Colleges provided courses taken pertain to current job or upgrades current job skills.
State Employees Credit Union: Membership welcomed. Contact the SECU Credit Union for information.
Community Service: 24 hours leave credited each calendar year (prorated for part-time) unless you choose the Mentoring/ tutoring option - 1 hour each week up to a max of 36 hours that schools are in session as documented by the elected board of the local education agency or the governing authority of any non-public school.
