Road Maintenance Worker I

The crews are responsible for inspecting and maintaining the roadways in their area. They are also responsible for roadside maintenance, such a brush cutting and tree trimming, and since they do not use chemicals, pesticides, or herbicides, ditches have to be maintained by hand or machine. They assess, repair, or replace drainage systems such as ditches and culverts, as these are an integral component of road maintenance.

Work Schedule:

* Summer hours: Monday-Thursday, 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM, 1/2 hour lunch
* Winter hours: Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, 1/2 hour lunch

What You'll Do:

* Flagging and weed eating
* Installing, repairing, and maintaining culverts, ditches, and drainage structures
* Excavating and clearing roads and ditches.
* Operating road equipment such as trucks, rollers, loaders and backhoes.
* Operating and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in the work.
* Properly placing cones, barricades and warning devices and directing traffic flow at job sites.

Under general supervision, performs both routine and skilled heavy, physical work in the maintenance, repair and construction of roads; operates a variety of vehicles, equipment and hand and power tools; performs related work as assigned.



DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Road Maintenance Worker I is the entry level class in this road maintenance series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in road maintenance, repair and construction. This class is alternately staffed with Road Maintenance Worker II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher level class.

* Breaks and removes surfaces; digs, shovels, hauls and loads and unloads spoils, sands, asphalt mixes and other materials; operates jack hammers, pavement breakers, concrete saws, spaders, tampers and a wide variety of hand and power tools related to road maintenance work; shovels, rakes, rolls and irons asphalt and sprays oil; operates a variety of heavy trucks; sand seals surfaces; prepares for overlays; cleans up work sites upon completion of jobs.
* Installs, repairs and maintains culverts, ditches and drainage structures; excavates and clears roads and ditches.
* Performs traffic monitoring and control, including the distribution of barricades, warning signs, safety cones and/or the flagging of vehicles.
* Performs brush clearance, tree removal and weed control work.
* Operates a variety of light construction equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, rollers, loaders, patch pots; may operate heavier equipment on a training basis.
* Performs snow removal and storm patrol work.
* Observes safe work methods and safety practices related to the work; cones and flags work sites to secure from traffic; uses appropriate safety equipment; observes safe driving practices.
* Inspects vehicles and performs minor maintenance; reports the need for major repairs and service; fuels and lubricates vehicles and related equipment; washes and cleans assigned vehicles.
* Operates and maintains a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to work assignments.
* Maintains basic records of daily work performed.
* May train and direct the work of others; may act in a lead capacity on specific jobs.
* Responds to emergency situations in off hours as required.

Knowledge of:

* Techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair and construction of roads.
* Operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment used in road construction and maintenance.
* Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment common to the field.
* Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.

Skill in:

* Operating road equipment such as trucks, rollers, loaders and backhoes.
* Operating and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in the work.
* Properly placing cones, barricades and warning devices and directing traffic flow at job sites.
* Performing heavy physical labor.
* Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
* Exercising independent judgment and initiative without close supervision.
* Keeping accurate records and preparing simple reports.

Other Requirements:



Must possess a valid California driver's license. Must obtain a Class B driver's license within 120 days for the I level and 30 days for the II level. Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to l00 pounds and to perform sustained heavy physical labor. Must be willing to work out of doors in all weather conditions, to work with exposure to traffic and to work overtime and off hours shifts in emergency situations.



Desirable Education and Experience:

A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills outlined above is:



Road Maintenance Worker I: Six months of work experience as a laborer in construction or maintenance work.



Road Maintenance Worker II: In addition to the above, one year of experience in the construction and maintenance of roads at a level equivalent to the County's class of Road Maintenance Worker I.

CalPERS RETIREMENT PROGRAM

Employees fall into one of the following tiers based on the date you first start working for the county or any other employer that uses CalPERS for retirement.

* Tier I - Prior to 7/5/2012: 2.7% @ 55
* Tier II - Post 7/6/2012: 2% @ 55
* Tier III - Post 1/1/2013: 2% @ 62



If this is your first job with a CalPERS employer, you will be in Tier III.

* 2% means that for every year you work for the county, you will receive 2% of your maximum annual pay rate for every year that you work for us (or other CalPERS employers) if you work the required minimum number of years (that's called vesting) and retire after the age following the @.
* For example, if you work 20 years and retire at 62 years of age, you will receive 20 x 2% or 40% of the average of your three highest years of annual pay in retirement payments.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD

Persons appointed to regular county positions serve a probationary period. This is normally six (6) months but could be up to one (1) year. All designated safety employees serve a one-year probationary period.

All County of Humboldt employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the county requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
